Know Your History: Al Sharpton

In 2004, political activist Al Sharpton announced his candidacy for the presidential election as a member of the Democratic party. To express his endorsement of Sharpton and encourage others to support him as well, singer Terrence Trent D’arby put together a video entitled “I Mean, I Guess We Can if We Pray Hard Enough” in which he set to music footage and audio of Sharpton at a Ryan’s Steakhouse buffet. The video featured such stars as Stoney Jackson, 90s Canadian reggae rapper Snow, Pinto Estrada (adopted brother of actor Eric Estrada), Kriss Kross, and the remaining member of Milli Vanilli. Though the video did not help Sharpton gain the nomination, it did inspire Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas to produce a similar, much more effective video for presidential hopeful Barack Obama in 2008 (if you listen closely at the video’s 2:37 minute mark, you can hear Sharpton weeping gently in the background).
