Stupidity Should Hurt.

Rick Santorum, the hapless former senator from my home state, thinks President Obama is setting a bad example for black men by taking the First Lady out on the occasional fancy date.

Number one, I think it’s great that the president has a date night with his wife. He’s a role model. He’s a role model in particular, whether he likes it or not, in the African-American community.

And you have an African-American community, particularly in the poor inner city areas, we’re looking at out of wedlock birthrates in three quarters to 75 percent (sic) of children being born out of wedlock. Marriage is an institution that’s a bridge too far for too many African-American woman and is not desirable among African-American males.

Here we have a president of the United States who says that marriage is cool. You have respect for your wife, and you treat her with the respect and dignity that she deserves. And she is part of this team. And it’s not just part of professional team, but it’s also part of a personal, romantic team. I think that’s all great. So I think it’s important that he keeps having his date night.

I think he has to realize that flying to New York is self-indulgent. Go down to the corner bar and have a drink, a shot and a beer. It does not matter where you go with your wife, is that it’s with your wife. That’s really the point… I would make the argument, the simpler the date, the more normal it is.

It connects to people. Here is what you do. Here is how you do it. And it is not going to Broadway. All right, once in awhile, you do something special. But it is mundane that really makes the marriage special, but because you are with your wife the mundane isn’t mundane. It’s special.

First, thought: Thanks for the, uh, concern.

Second: That, poor, poor Mrs. Santorum.

I saw that and almost sent it to you, then thought I’d be merciful

Let’s turn the first couple going out on a date, into an black-poverty identity issue. Because as we know all African American men don’t believe marriage is desirable, and the women, with all their babies, are destined to be alone.

I’m not sure if I’m impressed, or disgusted? There are times where I try to trick myself out of being generally put off by republican pundits, but then something happens to reaffirm my suspicions.

I guess a Big Mac and “Booty Call” would have been more to Santorum’s liking? Sheesh.

Ugh. There are few words…here I thought it was a fairly normal thing and thought it was kinda neat that they’re so darn human, compared to past Presidents and well…there’s this.

    How ridiculous!
Yes, I do see the Obamas as role models for marriage and relationships as far as I can tell. I mean, we don’t know them beyond their public selves. But I also see lots of other Black folks as relationship examples. Santorum makes it seem as though we haven’t seen a successfully married Black couple since Cliff and Clair!

I don’t know about yall, but I don’t find it outrageous or extravagant for well-off, Ivy League educated lawyers who make up the First Family to take in a Broadway play on date night. Besides, I get the feeling the Obamas wouldn’t have a problem getting a drink at the local bar anytime, but it’s DATE NIGHT!

I’m also glad stupidity is non-reversable. At least for Santorum.
